N95 Respirator Limited Reuse - Healthcare Professionals Providing Clinical Care

by Beth L. Beam, PhD, RN. A. Kim Hayes, MPH, BSN, RN

In this video we demonstrate potential approaches for donning and doffing of an N95 filtering facepiece respirator in a Limited Reuse situation. This video was developed based on the CDC guidelines for NIOSH approved N95 respirators.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Understand the definition of Limited Reuse for N95 respirators.
  • Understand which practices are essential for successful limited reuse of an N95 respirator.
  • Become familiar with potential methods of donning and doffing N95 respirators in a Limited Reuse situation

N95 Disposable Filtering Facepiece Respirator: Donning & Doffing

by Beth L. Beam, PhD, RN. A. Kim Hayes, MPH, BSN, RN

In this video we demonstrate the critical safety steps involved in correctly donning and doffing an N95 disposable filtering facepiece respirator, and how to perform a seal check prior to rendering patient care in any setting. We also show the most common mistakes made when placing the straps on your head.

In the early phases of a novel infection, airborne protection is commonly used. In order to protect first responders and healthcare providers from exposure to airborne and novel pathogens, the correct use of an N95 respirator is an important first step.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Correctly don an N95 disposable filtering facepiece respirator
  • Identify misplacement of straps after donning an N95 disposable filtering facepiece respirator
  • Correctly doff an N95 disposable filtering facepiece respirator

Respiratory Protection for Healthcare Workers Training Video

By the U.S Department of Labor

This is a presentation about the use of respirators in healthcare settings. In certain situations, healthcare workers may need to be protected from airborne hazards, such as infectious agents or hazardous chemicals in their workplace.

Respirators are a type of personal protective equipment, or PPE, that can protect you from breathing in such hazards.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Have a basic understanding of why respirators are used in the healthcare industry, and how to properly use them.
  • Understand that a standard issued by OSHA - the Occupational Safety and Health Administration - or by an OSHA-approved State plan, requires your employer to have a comprehensive respiratory protection program whenever respirators must be used.
  • Discuss some common myths about respirators that you may hear in your workplace.
  • Understand how to use a respirator and understand the major components of a respiratory protection program.
