Course Overview
A peace officer assigned to regularly investigate cases of sexual abuse or sexual exploitation of children under the age of 18 years must be certified to carry out those duties. The purpose of this course is to explain the crime elements required to arrest for harming a child by: injury, or endangerment, physical abuse of a child, lewd or lascivious acts with a child, annoying or molesting children, possession of child pornography, unlawful sexual intercourse and loitering about schools or public places where children congregate. To recognize the specific child abuse reporting requirements, to include the categories of professional occupations required to report harm to children.
It is a peace officer’s responsibility for maintaining the confidentiality of the reporting party. This course will discuss the exigent circumstances that could lead to forced entry of a location and/or removal of a child from the location and state the statutory definition of child abuse. At the end of this course you better understand physical and behavioral indicators of physical child abuse, physical neglect of a child, mental suffering and sexual abuse of a child. Each incident must be categorized as a misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor or felony.
